PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic – Lamar University graduate Shawn Stefani recorded a hole-in-one at the
Corales Putancana Resort & Club Championship this weekend en route to finishing in a tie for
13th place.
Stefani, who graduated from LU in 2005, registered his hole-in-one on Friday, acing the 217-yard 17
th hole. Stefani's celebration was delayed, as he was unaware that the ball had gone in. He finally
high-fived his playing partners after a cameraman informed that it was a hole-in-one. It was voted as one of the top five shots of the week on the PGA Tour. It was the second hole-in-one on the PGA Tour for Stefani, who had an ace in the final round of the 2013 U.S. Open.
Stefani is tied for
141st on the PGA's FedEx Cup points list. Stefani has three top-25 finishes this season, including one top-10 finish. He has earned $257,380 this year, boosting his career earnings to $5,401,698. Stefani, who turned pro in 2005, has two second-place finishes and 10 top-10 performances in his career. He had a pair of victories on the Web.com Tour in 2012.
Prior to turning pro, Stefani was a three-time All-Southland Conference selection while at LU, earning first-team honors in 2004 and second-team accolades in 2003 and 2005. He helped lead the 2003 Cardinals to the Southland Conference championship. The Cardinals participated in the NCAA Regionals in each of his four seasons, finishing as high as
12th in the regionals in 2005. His best effort in the regionals was in 2004, as he tied for
38th.
Stefani and former LU teammate Chris Stroud, who earned All-American honors during his time as a Cardinal, will compete in the PGA's Houston Open that gets underway Thursday at The Golf Club of Houston. Stroud, a 2004 LU graduate, is currently 135
th in the FedEx Cup points standings.
