BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University men's tennis team returns to action Sunday to open a stretch that will see the Cardinals at home for six of their next seven matches. The Cardinals (3-8) open the homestand Sunday against Texas-Arlington, and will follow that match up with a contest against Omaha Monday afternoon.
Although the young Cardinals have struggled out of the gate in 2018, they enter the weekend playing some of their best tennis of the season Big Red has won two of its last three matches with victories over Pacific and San Francisco. The lone setback during that stretch was a 5-2 decision against Abilene Christian five days ago in Beaumont.
A former Southland Conference opponent, UTA heads to Beaumont now representing the Sun Belt Conference. The Mavericks made their way to the Golden Triangle sporting a 9-8 (.517) overall record, but looking to right the ship. The Mavs have dropped two straight and five of their last seven matches, and are coming off a 4-1 setback against Columbia.
Sunday's match will begin at noon from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
The Cardinals will be back in action 27 hours later when they step on the court to face Omaha. The Omaha Mavericks have also faced their struggles during the 2018 campaign. The Mavs are 5-12 (.294) on the season, and head to Beaumont having dropped five straight. The Mavericks are coming off a 6-0 setback to UMKC two days ago in Omaha. The Mavericks' last victory came a month ago against George Washington in Des Moines, Iowa.
Monday's match against Omaha will begin at 3 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
