Cardinals Tripped Up By Eastern Michigan

Box Score BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team took an early one-point lead after winning the doubles point Thursday morning but was unable to hold off a late charge as Eastern Michigan rallied for a 4-3 victory at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center. The match was moved from the Thompson Family Tennis Center on campus due to a threat of rain.

"We had our opportunities to win this match and we let them slip away today," said LU head coach David Wong. "When you have chances to get a win and you don't take advantage it will come back to haunt you and that happened here this afternoon. You simply can't give a team as talented as Eastern Michigan extra opportunities."

The Cardinals got quick wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles to take the one-point lead after the doubles competition. LU added to its advantage when freshmen Amelie Vossgaetter opened singles play with a 6-1, 7-5 decision over the Eagles' Andrea Martinovska at No. 4 singles.

Big Red held the momentum through the early part of the match as sophomore Sanja Jolic bested Marie Mayerova, 6-2, 6-4, on court No. 2. Jolic's win put the Cardinals up 3-0 needing just one more match for the team victory – a match that would never come.

After taking the 3-0 lead, things began to fall apart on the Cardinals. EMU got on the scoreboard with a straight-sets victory at No. 6 singles. With the deficit trimmed to 3-1, the remaining three matches all went to a third set. Unfortunately for the Red and White, the Eagles recorded wins on all three of the remaining courts.

The Cardinals have no time to focus on the setback as they will be back in action Saturday for two against South Alabama. LU will face South Alabama Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by another match against the Jaguars Sunday at 11 a.m. Big Red was supposed to face Southern Miss on the trip to Mobile but the Golden Eagles backed out of the match at the last minute.
