Cardinals Top Prairie View A&M

Box Score BEAUMONT, Texas – After numerous delays and a venue change, the Lamar University women's tennis team defeated Prairie View A&M, 4-0, in a clinch-clinch style match Tuesday afternoon at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Complex. Big Red improves to 1-2 on the season with the victory, while Prairie View falls to 0-8.

"I'm very proud of our girls today," said LU head coach David Wong. "I thought we played up to our potential. We play Prairie View every year and they have continued to improve. They took two points from UTSA earlier this season, so they are a program on the rise.

"We absolutely had to get a match in before Saturday due to the long break since our previous matches. The weather delays have hurt so it was nice to get back out on the court today, despite the weather. There is a lot of parity in our league, and this is one of those seasons where the championship may very well come down the very last match of the season. It is important for us to get in as many matches as can before the start of conference play because we are so very young (four freshmen and two sophomores)," added Wong.

Tuesday's match was moved from the Thompson Family Tennis Center to the Beaumont Municipal Complex to utilize the indoor courts, but it was shortened from a doubleheader to a single match.

The Cardinals wasted little time getting on the scoreboard taking victories on all three singles courts. After taking a 6-1 decision on court No. 3, lines 1 and 2 doubles finished at nearly the same time to lock up the point.

Sophomore Jasmin Buchta added to the Cards' advantage with her straight-sets victory at No. 1 singles. She ousted Prairie View's Stacy Lackey, 6-2, 6-3, for the second point of the match. Classmate Sanja Jolic followed at No. 2 singles. Jolic claimed identical 6-1 scores to record the straight-sets winner.

Continuing to follow suit, freshman Amelie Vossgaetter defeated PVAMU's Jimena Duran-Castellano in thrilling fashion, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) for the decisive blow. Even if the Cardinals needed to go further into the lineup to get the win they were sitting in strong position as LU got opening set victories on each of the final three courts, and were either tied or leading in their respective second sets.

The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they host UT Rio Grande Valley. The match against the Vaqueros will begin at 11 a.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
