Cardinals Prep for Final Two Matches

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team will close the 2017 regular season with two matches in southern Louisiana. The Cardinals road trip begins Thursday at Southeastern Louisiana (a match which was originally schedule to be played Friday) and will wrap up the trip Saturday match at New Orleans.

The Cardinals (14-7/6-3 SLC) enter the week with an outside chance at a share of the Southland Conference regular-season title. LU is currently fourth in the conference standings two games back of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – a team the Cards defeated earlier this season – and just a half game back of Central Arkansas and Abilene Christian for second place.

Big Red currently holds the No. 3 overall seed in the tournament due to the fact that Abilene Christian is not eligible for the tournament because they are in the midst of the transition from the NCAA Division II status up to Division I level.

The Cardinals recently ended their toughest stretch of the season bouncing back from a three-match skid with an impressive 7-0 victory over Nicholls on Senior Day in Beaumont.

The Cardinals 14 victories are the most since 2011 when LU posted a 19-win campaign. The 2017 season currently ties for the seventh best mark in program history.

Southeastern Louisiana enters the week looking to right the ship. The Lady Lions are 3-14 (.176) on the season and still looking for their first league victory (0-9). After a great start to the season winning their first three matches, SLU has now lost 14 consecutive.

The match against the Lady Lions will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday from the Southeastern Tennis Complex in Hammond.

The Cardinals will be back in action less than 48 hours later when they travel to New Orleans, La., to take on the Privateers. UNO is currently tied for seventh in the league standings with a 5-4 (.556) record. The Privateers (13-7) enter the final week of the season having split their last eight decisions, and is coming off a 6-1 setback at Central Arkansas. UNO will host Sam Houston State Thursday before taking on the Cardinals.

The match against the Privateers will begin at 11 a.m. from the University Tennis Center on the UNO campus.
