BEAUMONT, Texas – Four members of the Lamar University women's soccer team were named United Soccer Coaches All-Region team. Junior forward
Kelso Peskin was named to the second team, while senior midfielder
M.J. Eckart, junior defender
Amelia Fullmer and freshman forward
Lucy Ashworth were all named to the third team.
The Cardinals, who won the Southland Conference regular-season and tournament titles, had the most selections of any SLC school. LU went 18-4-1 overall and 10-1 in conference play, setting school records for wins and conference wins. LU dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to sixth-ranked Texas A&M in the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinals matched an NCAA record by having 16 more wins than the previous season, when LU went 2-14-3.
This marks the first time in the 11-year history of the LU soccer program that the Cardinals have had an all-region selection.
"I don't think I've ever had four players named all-region in one year before," said LU coach
Steve Holeman, who coached at Ole Miss Auburn and Georgia before coming to LU. "This is really incredible.
Peskin led LU in scoring this season with 27 points on eight goals and a school-record 11 assists. Peskin was a first-team All-Southland Conference selection.
Eckart, another first-team all-conference pick, totaled 15 points on six goals and three assists. She set a school single-season record with four penalty-kick goals. Fullmer, a second-team all-conference choice known for her defense, led all LU field players with 2,000 minutes played. Ashworth, another first-team all-conference pick was second on the Cardinals in scoring with four goals and eight assists for 16 points.
"To have a player recognized as one of the top players in our region of the country is truly an honor. To have four players named is something really special," Holeman said. "This program has come a long way in a year's time, and all four of these young women played a huge role in our success. The fact that three of the four selections are newcomers speaks well for the future of our program."
