Cardinals Have Five Named Academic All-SLC

BEAUMONT, Texas - Awards continue to pour in for the Lamar University soccer team as five members have been named to the 2025 Academic All-Southland Conference team announced league officials Monday afternoon. Earning this distinguished honor are Cena Carlson, Marissa Gross, Annika Kassenbrock, Katherine Williams and Sydney Williams.
 
To qualify for Academic All-SLC honors, student-athletes had to maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average throughout the semester, must have finished one academic year at the nominating institution and competed in 50 percent of the team's competitions throughout the season.
 
Carlson (Gilette, Wyo.) achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA while majoring in biology. The sophomore appeared in 17 games and playing in 915 minutes. She scored three goals, including game-winners against Sam Houston and Texas Southern, and dishing out three assists.
 
Gross (South Grand Prairie, Texas), a junior majoring in university studies, was one of two Cardinals with a 3.83 GPA. She logged 1,002 minutes in 17 games and recorded a goal against SHSU and East Texas A&M while delivering two assists.
 
Kassenbrock (Longmont, Colo.) spent her semester earning a 3.47 GPA in exercise science. The senior appeared in all 20 games while starting 18 for Big Red and accumulated 1,185 minutes. Helping the Cardinals to five shutouts on defense, Kassenbrock was second in the conference with eight assists, including a school-tying record five against Texas A&M-San Antonio.
 
Katherine Williams (Spring, Texas) recorded a 3.66 GPA as an accounting major. The senior totaled 912 minutes in 20 matches with four starts. Against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, she broke a school record by scoring the fastest goal in school history in 27 seconds. Along the way, Williams picked up an assist vs. Texas Southern and TAMU-San Antonio.
 
Sydney Williams (Allen, Texas) finished her sophomore fall semester with a 3.83 GPA in university studies health sciences. In 1,152 minutes (20 matches), she scored two goals, including a game-winner against Houston Christian and recorded three assists. She anchored the defense to five shutouts and would earn a spot on the All-SLC second team.
 
The Cardinals finished the season 7-8-5 overall and 3-3-4 in the conference to earn the sixth seed in the conference tournament. LU reached the semifinals after a win against Southeastern Louisiana in the first round.
