BEAUMONT, Texas - Sixth-seeded Lamar University could not pull off a second-straight upset falling to No. 2-seed Stephen F. Austin, 2-0, Thursday evening in the semifinals of the Southland Conference Championship tournament at the LU Soccer Complex. The Cardinals' season comes to an end with a 7-8-5 record.
The Cardinals posted 13 shots with
Kam Jalayer picking up a match-high four.
Maddie Rich started for the Cardinals in net and totaled five saves in 82 minutes, while
Eloise Bywater finished out the final eight minutes of the match.
For most of the first half, the Cardinals were on the defensive as they had to survive nine SFA shots. Rich was up to the task, stopping four shots and keeping the Ladyjacks off the scoreboard. LU had two scoring opportunities in the 32nd and 41st minutes, respectively, but couldn't break through as both teams went into halftime scoreless.
As the second half started, LU nearly grabbed the lead in the 46th minute on a shot from
Lauren Smith before the Ladyjacks' goalkeeper got the save. The Cardinals took possession of the ball on SFA's side of the field for the first 15 minutes. SFA withstood Big Red's early chances and would strike the first goal in the 65th minute to grab the 1-0 lead. LU wouldn't back down as it went for the equalizer on five chances over the final 25 minutes. SFA's goalkeeper would prove to be an obstacle the Cardinals couldn't get past, while the Ladyjacks sealed the 2-0 win with a last minute goal.
