BEAUMONT, Texas – After sweeping their home-opening doubleheader, the Lamar University men's tennis team travels to Los Angeles, Calif., to compete in the ITA National Indoors Qualifying Tournament. The Cardinals will compete in two matches during their 48 hours on the West Coast. LU will take on Boise State Saturday at noon (2 p.m. Beaumont time) followed by either New Mexico or UCLA the following day – start times for Sunday's matches have not yet been set. All matches will be played at the Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts in Los Angeles.
The Cardinals enter the week with a 2-1 (.667) overall record, and have won their last two contests. After falling in the season opener at Rice, the Cardinals bounced back with two victories last Saturday. Big Red hosted Alcorn State in a doubleheader – the home opener – outscoring the Braves, 11-1, in the two matches. The Cardinals posted a shutout, 7-0, in the first match against Alcorn followed by a 4-1 decision in the second.
Boise State enters the weekend match with 1-2 (.333) overall record. The Broncos opened the season with a 7-0 victory over Whitman before running into some troubles. Boise State followed up its victory with a 5-2 setback against Denver and a 6-1 loss to Cal Poly. Saturday's match against LU will be the Broncos first match away from Boise.
When New Mexico steps on the court Saturday it will be their first match in two weeks. UNM heads to Los Angeles still looking for its first win. The Lobos opened the season with losses to Texas Tech, Arizona and Central Florida (all three matches were played in Lake Nova, Fla.). UNM found offense tough to come by in the opening weekend dropping all three matches by a combined, 12-2, score.
UCLA is the only team of the four that enters the week with an undefeated record. The Bruins are 2-0 after posting wins over Grand Canyon (7-0) and UC Santa Barbara (5-2). UCLA has yet to leave its home facility during the 2017 spring season. The Bruins will host New Mexico at 2 p.m. (4 p.m. Beaumont time).
Saturday's match against BSU will open a five-match swing away from Beaumont for the Cardinals. After the matches in Los Angeles, the Cardinals will travel to Houston, Texas Friday, Feb. 3, for a neutral-site match against Baylor. The match against the Bears will begin at 7 p.m.
