BEAUMONT, Texas – Winners in five of their last six outings, the Lamar University men's tennis team (6-3/.667) travels to Stillwater, Okla., Sunday for a tough doubleheader against No. 5 Oklahoma State and No. 47 Iowa. The first match will begin at 3 p.m. against the Cowboys, followed by a 7 p.m. contest against the Hawkeyes. Both matches will take place at the Greenwood Tennis Center on the OSU campus.
The Cardinals are coming off an impressive 6-1 victory over Presbyterian College that saw Big Red rally from a 1-0 deficit after losing the doubles point. LU was dominant in the singles taking all six matches, with only two going to a third set.
OSU enters the week as one of the nation's top teams. Currently ranked fifth nationally, the Cowboys have lost only once in 2016 (12-1/.923). Their lone setback was a one-point decision at No. 3 TCU. OSU has since rattled off four consecutive wins, and their last four wins have come against nationally ranked foes.
Things don't get any easier in the nightcap as LU will take on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Iowa is 7-3 (.700) on the season with wins over four nationally ranked teams and has won three of their last four matches, but is coming off a one-point setback at Drake.
The Cardinals are 0-2 all-time against Iowa with the matches coming in 1996 and 2008. LU has never played Oklahoma State (according to LU records).
The Cards are in the midst of a six-match stretch away from Beaumont. LU continues the road swing Tuesday when they travel to Omaha, Neb. for a 10 a.m. match against the University of Omaha. Big Red closes out the road trip six hours later in Lincoln against the University of Nebraska.
