BEAUMONT, Texas – After opening the season with five consecutive road matches, the Lamar University men's tennis team will bring its 3-2 (.600) record back to Beaumont for the first home match of the season. The Cardinals open the two-match homestand Friday with a 2 p.m. match against Prairie View A&M. The Cardinals return to the court two days later to take on Oral Roberts (10 a.m.). Both matches will take place at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
Big Red enters the week coming off consecutive wins after knocking off Southern Mississippi and UT Rio Grande Valley. LU's only two losses this season have come against nationally ranked in-state foes Texas and Texas A&M.
The Panthers have struggled to start the 2016 spring campaign. Prairie View A&M is 0-6 heading into the weekend. Oral Roberts is 3-3 (.500) on the season, and enters the weekend having lost two of its last three outings, and is coming off a 5-2 setback against No. 64 Arkansas in Tulsa.
The Red and White faced both teams last season coming away with a 2-0 record. LU shutout Prairie View, and posted a 5-2 victory over ORU.
The Cardinals enter the week riding the strength of the bottom half of its singles ladder. After posting a thrilling victory to win the doubles point over UTRGV, LU hammered the Vaqueros in singles play posting five consecutive wins to lock up the victory. The first three wins came from the team's Nos. 4-6 singles positions putting the match on ice before UTRGV dented the scoreboard.
Big Red heads into the homestand looking to get out to a similar start as last season. If LU can pick two wins this week it would equal its start from last season.
The Cardinals return to action Sunday, Feb. 28, to take on LSU. The match against the Tigers will begin at 5 p.m. from Baton Rouge, La.
