BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's basketball team heads to The Sin Flower State to face the Kansas State Wildcats in a non-conference women's basketball game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Cardinals (1-2) will be playing their third road game against a team from one of the Power Five conferences, as the Wildcats are members of the Big 12. LU opened the season with road losses to Pac-12 members Oregon and Oregon State.
Sunday's game also marks the third time the Cardinals are facing team that qualified for a national postseason tournament last year. Kansas State reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2015-16. Oregon State advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament, while Oregon made it to the Final Four of the WNIT.
"These games are going to make us better," LU coach Robin harmony said. "I saw improvement in our games at Oregon State and Oregon. We learned from our mistakes, and we built some confidence."
The Cardinals come into Sunday's game off a convincing 95-49 win over St. Thomas (Texas) on Wednesday, as five players scored in double figures, while
Chastadie Barrs posted a career-high nine steals.
Kansas State (2-0) opened its season with a pair of impressive home victories, defeating Chicago State 83-33 and Tulsa 82-62. Kayla Goth averages 16.5 points per game to pace five Wildcats who average in double figures in scoring. The Wildcats have also dominated the boards this season, outrebounding their opponents by an average of 17 caroms per game.
Moe Kinard leads the Cardinal in scoring, averaging 13.3 points per game. Other Cardinals averaging in double figures are
Baileigh O'Dell (11.3),
Kiandra Bowers (11.0) and
DeA'ngela Mathis (10.0). O'Dell is tied for 16
th in the nation with 10 3-pointers.
Barrs, who has at least one steal in all 34 games of her LU career, ranks third in the nation with 14 steals. Her 16 assists have her ranked 30
th in the nation. Bowers is 20
th in the nation with seven blocked shots.
Sunday's game will be streamed live on ESPN3. The Kansas State game is the first of three games in a week for the Cardinals, who host Northern Arizona at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Montagne Center before heading to Buffalo, N.Y., to meet the Canisius College Golden Griffins on Nov. 26.
