LAFAYETTE, La. – Michael Feucht held on for a thrilling three-set win at No. 1 singles to give the Lamar University men's tennis team a 4-3 win over host Louisiana-Lafayette in a non-conference match Saturday afternoon.

"It's good to beat those guys on their home court," LU coach Scott Shankles said. "It's the second straight year we've beaten them at their place in front of their fans.

Feucht's match with Louisiana-Lafayette's Jake Wynan was the only singles match to go three sets. After dropping the first set 6-4, Feucht fought back to win the next two sets by identical 6-2 scores to give the Cardinals (1-1) their first win of the season.

"Our focus was to bring energy right from the start. We wanted to maintain that energy from doubles into the singles competition," Shankles said. "I think we showed some maturity today."

Feucht and Benny Schweizer got things rolling quickly for the Cardinals (1-1) as they breezed to a 6-0 win over Coleman Wahlborg and Wynan at No. 2 doubles.

LU's Nikita Lis and Jeandre Hoogenboezem claimed a hard-fought 7-6 win over Arthur Libaud and Will Huyton at first doubles, while Juuso Laitinen and Sebastian Santibanez were 6-3 winners over Edgar Lopez and Eric Perez at third doubles.

"Winning the doubles point was a huge factor in the outcome," Shankles said. "We won it convincingly. That set the tone for the rest of the match. That was huge."

Santibanez swept to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Wahlborg at No. 4 singles, while Hoogenboezem was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Huyton at No. 5 singles for the other two LU wins in the singles competition.

Louisiana-Lafayette's Libaud was a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Lis at No. 2 singles, Lopez took a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Schweizer at No. 3 singles, while Vlad Kramarov defeated Laitinen 6-2, 6-3 at sixth singles.

That all set the stage for Feucht to play the role of hero for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals return to action at 4 p.m. Sunday with a non-conference match at Texas A&M.
