HAMMOND, La. - Two three-run frames helped the Lions break open the contest and led Southeastern Louisiana to a 6-0 win over the Lamar baseball team at Alumni Field on Friday in Southland Conference action.
Lamar (19-26, 8-14 Southland Conference) starter Chase Angelle and SLU (34-13, 18-4) starter Tate Scioneaux went toe-to-toe for four innings before the Lions' Chris Eades crushed a three-run homer in the fifth to give SLU a 3-0 lead.
Kennon Menard singled to right field with one out and Julian Service put two on after he singled to left. Eades followed with a homer to left center.
Angelle (5-5) took the loss on six innings pitched and three runs allowed. He surrendered five hits and struck out four. The senior lefty was pulled in the seventh inning for Galen Andrews, who gave up three runs in one-third of an inning.
Brett Hoffman opened the inning with a single through the left side, followed by Menard's single to center field. Service pushed across Hoffman on a double to right center. Eades rolled over and pushed the ball to LU third baseman Reed Seeley, who chopped down Menard at home. Despite that, Service and Eades scored on the SLC's leading hitter Jacob Seward's one-out single to left center.
Will Hibbs gave up the single to Seward, but Andrews was responsible for all three of the runs; Hibbs pitched two-thirds of an inning. Kyle Legget entered the game in the eighth and finished with a perfect inning on nine pitches.
Scioneaux pitched a complete game and allowed only four hits and one walk. The right-hander sat down 11 Cardinals on punchouts. It was the most strikeouts against LU since April 3 when it lost to Texas A&M-Corpus Christ.
The Cardinals loaded the bases in the second inning, on Brandon Provost's single, fielder's choice from Brendan Satran and walk to Joe Arechiga. Scioneaux was bailed out of the inning on a groundout.
Provost had two base knocks in the contest in four at-bats. Freshman CJ Moore and junior transfer Stijn van der Meer also record hits, both were 1-of-4 on the day. The four hits were the fewest the Cardinals have accumulated since they had four against Texas-Pan American in the ninth game of the season.
The second game of the three-game set is scheduled for 3 o'clock Saturday and the finale is at 1:00 on Sunday.
