BEAUMONT, Texas — Former Major League Baseball player Tres Barrera announced his retirement and will join Sean Allen's staff at Lamar University as hitting coach beginning with the 2027 season.

"I'm incredibly excited and honored to join coach Sean Allen and the Lamar baseball family," Barrera said. "Lamar has a proud winning tradition, and I'm committed to building on that legacy.

"I'm passionate about developing the next generation of Cardinals, challenging our players to reach their full potential and compete for championships."

Barrera spent parts of four seasons in the majors with the Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals from 2019-23, appearing in 57 games.

He batted .228 with two home runs and 14 RBIs and was a member of Washington's 2019 World Series championship team.

Over nine minor league seasons, Barrera hit .241 with 51 home runs, 449 hits and 231 RBIs in 539 career games.

Most recently, he appeared in 16 games for the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings in 2026, recording 12 hits, one double, one home run and eight RBIs.

Born in Eagle Pass, Barrera was selected by the Nationals in the sixth round of the 2016 MLB Draft following a standout career at Texas.

A catcher, he was ranked as the organization's No. 19 prospect in 2020.

Barrera made his major league debut Sept. 14, 2019, against the Atlanta Braves. He recorded his first MLB hit on July 4, 2021, with a seventh inning single off Blake Treinen of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"Tres is one of those people who was simply born to be on a baseball field," Allen said. "From the first time I was around him, what stood out the most was his passion for the game and his genuine desire to make everyone around him better.

"He has competed and won at the highest levels of baseball, and winning has been a constant throughout his career. More importantly, he brings an incredible baseball mind, relentless work ethic and an unwavering commitment to player development."

At Texas, Barrera earned All-Big 12 honorable mention honors as a junior in 2016 after batting .289 with six home runs, 17 doubles, 35 runs scored and 37 RBIs.

He was a second-team All-Big 12 selection in 2015, ranking third in the conference in home runs (nine), ninth in slugging percentage (.481) and tied for eighth in walks (33).

As a sophomore, Barrera led the Longhorns in home runs and on-base percentage (.395) while tying for the team lead in runs scored (38) and walks (33). He also ranked second on the team in hits (61) and tied for second in triples (three).

As a freshman in 2014, Barrera helped lead Texas to the College World Series. During NCAA Regional play, he batted .333 (5 for 15) with two doubles in four games against Rice and Texas A&M.

Barrera attended Mission Sharyland High School, where he was named a Louisville Slugger first team All-American as a senior in 2013. He finished his high school career with a .452 batting average and 22 home runs.
