BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar jumped out to a hot start after it claimed the doubles point and five of the first sets in singles action on Friday to lead the men's tennis team to a 6-1 win over Incarnate Word at the Thompson Family Tennis Center in Southland Conference action.

Court three in doubles wrapped up first, and Juuso Laitinen and Mikko Rajamaki gave LU (10-9, 1-0 Southland Conference) the early advantage. They defeated Brody Rodriguez and A. Buchanan-Dempsey 8-1. Soon after, Michael Feucht and Benny Schweizer fell to Josip Smoljan and Leonard Ivic 8-6 to even the point.

Nikita Lis and Jeandre Hoogenboezem continued their undefeated streak with an 8-7 (4) win over Tucker Brown and Joey Vatanadilok to lock the doubles point. That team is 6-0, all from court one.

All five Cardinals who took the first set, won their singles matches. Lis won 6-3 in his first set, and took the match after a 7-6 tiebreak on No. 1. He improved to 10-7 this season and snapped a three-match skid.

Feucht defeated Smoljan on court two in straight sets on a 6-4 set one win and 6-2 finisher. He bettered his record to 12-6 this season, 10-6 from the second position, and is 5-0 in his last five decisions.

Schweizer improved to 11-7 on a three-setter that ended a tight match. He took the first set 7-6, but Brown battled to take the second 6-1. The final set ended 11-9, and Schweizer improved to 3-2 on No. 4.

Both Steven McMullen and Rajamaki handled their opponents swiftly. McMullen downed Rodriguez 6-2 and 6-4 from position five, and Rajamaki held Buchanan-Dempsey scoreless on six. McMullen improved to 7-4 this season and Rajamaki 6-5.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Tuesday at 2 o'clock at nationally-ranked Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. They will not return home until the final match of the regular season against New Orleans on April 19 at 2:00.
