THIBODAUX, La. - Nikita Lis, Michael Feucht and Benny Schweizer came up big for the Lamar men's tennis team on Saturday when the Cardinals defeated Nicholls 4-1 in a Southland Conference battle at Colonels Tennis Complex.
Lamar's win improved it to 12-10 on the year and 3-1 in league play, which sets a battle for the second seed of the Southland Conference Tournament- hosted in Beaumont- on Sunday with New Orleans, which is also 3-1 in league play.
The Cardinals will honor their lone senior, Mikko Rajamaki, in pregame festivities on Sunday. That match is slated to start at 2 o'clock at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
Feucht and Schweizer teamed up for an 8-2 doubles win over Sam Meessen and Lukas Clemens on court two. That duo improved their team record 5-3 and 2-1 in league action.
Each one also took their singles contest. Feucht defeated Clemens on line two in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, and Schweizer battled back to take down Bernard Wezeman after falling in the first set 7-6. He won the second set 6-3 and the final 6-1.
Feucht is 14-7 on the year and 3-1 in Southland Conference action, while also moves up to 14-7 and remains undefeated in league play (4-0).
Lis joined Jeandre Hoogenboezem and remained perfect in doubles action for the season. The two locked up the doubles point on court one on an 8-5 win over Kieran Cronin and Wezeman. As an individual, Lis is 16-0 in doubles play.
He is 12-8 in singles play on the year after he beat Partha Adavelly in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Every match he has played this season- both singles and doubles- is from the top court.
Hoogenboezem fell to Evan Karatzas on line three 6-3, 6-3. Senior Mikko Rajamaki and Cronin started play on court five, but it was called once the match was sealed by Schweizer. Due to the weather, both programs elected only play until the match was clinched.
Juuso Laitinen and Rajamaki were tied with Adavelly and Karatzas on No. 3 in doubles, but it was called when that point was clinched.
