CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Just like in the first meeting with Texas-San Antonio, it was a heartbreaker for the Lamar men's tennis team, which lost to the Roadrunners 4-3 on Saturday and finished sixth at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions hosted by the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
During the tourney, all matches started with singles and doubles were played if needed. In both of the matches the Cards (6-6) lost (Southern Mississippi, UTSA) doubles were required.
Diogo Casa and Joel Robio sealed the win with a doubles win over Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Mikko Rajamaki, 6-3, on court two.
Court three doubles went to UTSA (7-5) with Tito Moreiras' and Joel Rubio's victory over Trey Crysel and Steven McMullan, 6-1. Michael Feucht's and Nikita Lis' match on court one against Tomas Stillman and Yannick Junger went unfinished with LU's 5-2 lead.
Lamar jumped out to a 1-0 lead in singles action after Hoogenboezem downed Rubio, 6-3, 6-3 on line four, but UTSA answered on line three with Moreiras' 6-3, 6-3 win over Benny Schweizer. The Runners took 2-1 lead on court five on Joao Riquelme's 7-5, 6-4 win over Juuso Laitinen, and then a 3-1 lead when Lis lost to 77th ranked Stillman, 7-5, 6-4.
Steven McMullan cut the lead to 3-2 on a three-set win over Jake Rother on court six, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 before Feucht forced the match to doubles on a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Junger on line two .
Lamar hosts Bryant University on Monday at the Thompson Family Tennis Center before the Cards open up a five-game road stand that features Wofford, South Carolina-Upstate, Presbyterian, Oral Roberts and UT-Arlington.
