Tournament Draw
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Lamar men's tennis team rebounded from a 4-3 loss to Southern Mississippi in the first round and took down New Mexico State 4-0 in the second match on Saturday at the H-E-B Tennis Courts in the H-E-B Tournament of Championship hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
The Cardinals (6-5) will face Texas-San Antonio on Saturday at 9:30 in the fifth place match to round out their time at the tournament. Lamar and the Roadrunners met on Feb. 21 and LU lost a close battle 4-3.
With no doubles action played against New Mexico State, wins in singles from Nikita Lis, Michael Feucht, Benny Schweizer and Jeandre Hoogenboezem decided the match for the Cards, all in straight sets. Lis downed Strahinja Trecakov, 6-3, 6-0 on line one and Feucht defeated Paul Denele, 6-2, 6-1 on the second court.
On court three, Benny Schweizer scooted by Liam Goldberg, 6-3, 6-1 and Jeandre Hoogenboezem overcame Christopher Gonclaves, 6-4, 6-4. The match against Juuso Laitinen and Germain Degardin when unfinished at 6-3, 1-4, as well as the contest between Steven McMullan and Charles Baron, 6-7, 0-1.
Lis pushed his singles win streak to three with the win over Trecakov, and both he and Laitinen improved their singles records to 6-2.
Southern Mississippi won the first match of the day on a doubles point victory after Brad Marriot and Alex Doleac defeated Hoogenboezem and Rajamaki 7-6 (7-4) on court two and Daniel Merker and Mikhail Esipov downed Laitinen and Schweizer 6-3.
Feucht and Lis won in the first spot over Wen-Po Tseng and Chao-Yu Huang, 7-5. That win kept the duo perfect this season, 7-0. Individually, Lis is 7-0 in doubles and Feucht is 7-1.
Lis, who won his match in the first pairing a week earlier, won again 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 over Tarun Surat. Feucht defeated Wen-Po Tseng in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, after losing the first matchup. Huang downed Hoogenboezem 6-4, 6-4 on court three, and Schweizer won his second match over Alex Doleac in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The first match between Schweizer and Doleac went three sets.
Merker got by Steven McMullan on court four 7-5, 6-3, and Esipov rounded it out against Rajamaki 0-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Against the Roadrunners, the Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but UTSA mounted a comeback and took the match 4-3. Hoogenboezem and Laitinen took their singles matches, and Lis, Feucht, Hoogenboezem and Rajamaki all recorded doubles wins.
