Final Stats

BEAUMONT, Texas - Cardinal starter Chase Angelle kept Abilene Christian off-balance all night and Brendan Satran tied a school record for stolen bases on Friday, and both led the Lamar baseball team to a 6-1 win over the Wildcats in non-conference action at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Even though both teams are Southland Conference programs, due to the uneven number of members in league each team has a weekend out of conference play. Both programs elected to play each other in non-league action. Lamar improved their overall record to 12-13 while ACU fell to 5-17 on the year.

The second game of the series is scheduled for 2 o'clock Saturday and can been seen on BigRedSN.com, and the finale is at 1 o'clock Sunday and can be heard on KLVI 560 AM. Harold Mann will be on the call for both.

Angelle (3-3) finished his second complete game in as many starts and allowed only one unearned run in the contest on five hits and no walks. He finished the game with seven strikeouts. Friday's match was the second series he's opened on the mound, and in that time he's only allowed one earned run and 12 hits.

"Second great Friday night game and second great game he has pitched. You get a guy who can give you a complete game in the opener, and it leaves a full bullpen ready for the last two games," said head coach Jim Gilligan. "He's done that twice now, and I can't say enough about him."

He sat down seven straight from the first to fourth innings, and then eight in a row from the fourth through seventh frames.

"Chase worked. He keeps you ready to field because we works fast," said Gilligan. "It was a good all-around night. I thought we looked good defensively. Chase kept everyone off balance and we played well all around."

Satran was 4-of-4 on the day from the sixth spot in the lineup, with a run scored in the sixth inning. He reached in the second frame on a single to center field and stole second and third, but was stranded there. He singled to right center in his second at-bat but was called out trying to go from second to third on a grounder.

He reached on a one-bagger to left field and stole his way to third base before scoring on a ground out to the pitcher by Mason Salazar. His final hit was the eight on a single to left field.

He tied LU's individual steals in a game record and now claims it with Corey Cephus, Chad Bunting, Luis Callazo (twice) and Harold Flynn. As a team, LU stole seven bags, Brandon Provost, Satran (4), and CJ Moore (2). The school record for team stolen bags in a game is 10 set against Texas Southern in 1987.

"It's a pity he couldn't break it, but we had a 6-0 lead and did not feel like we should run anymore," said Gilligan. "We've been working on our base running, and that was evident tonight especially in Satran's numbers."

The most team stolen bases LU in a game this season at the outset of the contest was three, season opener against New Mexico State.

Provost broke the scoreless tie in the third inning on a three-run home run over the centerfield wall. Stijn van der Meer lined a one-out double to left center to and Reed Seeley was walked in the next at-bat to put two on for Provost.

Kyle Markum walked and reached second on Satran's second hit in the fourth. Both advanced a bag on a wild pitch and Markum scored on a fielder's choice from Moore. Another walk bit ACU, the second time to Provost in the fifth. He stole second, took third on a grounder to the right side and scored on a shortstop error.

Garrett DeMeyere (2-3) started for Wildcats, and pitched six innings. He allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits and three walks. Landon Holifeld relieved him in the seventh and closed out the game, with only three hits allowed.

Provost was 1-of-3 with three runs knocked in and two runs scored, he reached on a walk in the fifth frame. Van der Meer had three hits in five tries, two were doubles. As a team, the Cardinals finished with 10 hits, five more than ACU.

"We swung the bats well tonight for the most part," said Gilligan. "We had real good approaches and guys were putting together some very good swings."

Friday's contest was the first of an eight-game home stand for Lamar. It features Rice, Grambling and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
