BEAUMONT, Texas - Rough first sets in singles play aided Southern Mississippi to a 5-2 victory over the Lamar men's tennis team Friday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center in nonconference action.
Southern Miss (6-3) took five first sets in singles play, the only Cardinal (5-4) to take his first set was Benny Schweizer, who did that with a 6-3 score. He went on to win in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 10-7 on court four.
Nikita Lis was also able to get his match to a third set and win over Tarun Surat on the first court, 5-7, 6-4, 10-6. He along with teammate Michael Feucht were the only duo from LU to win their doubles match, 6-2. They downed Wen-Po Tseng and Chao-You Huang on line one.
Tseng downed Feucht in singles, 7-6, 7-5 on court two just before Schweizer and Lis won.
After the Golden Eagles won the double point, they made quick work to grab the win with victories on courts three, five and six. Jeandre Hoogenboezem played tight with Huang, 7-5, 7-5 on line three. Mikhail Esipov downed Juuso Laitinen 6-3, 7-5 on court five, it snapped a five-game win steak for him.
Rikshit Rishi won his match over Steven McMullan on court six, 7-6, 6-2.
In doubles, court two saw a Doleac and Brad Marriot win over Hoogenboezem and Mikko Rajamaki, 6-3. Laitnen and Schweizer lost to Daniel Merker and Esipov, 6-2, on court three.
The loss was the first that Lamar has suffered at the Thompson Family Tennis Center this season. The Cards will round out their two-game homestand Sunday morning when they host Texas-Pan American at 11 o'clock.
