BEAUMONT, Texas - The Cardinals jumped up 2-0, but UTSA was able to mount a comeback victory over the Lamar men's tennis team on Saturday at the UTSA Tennis Center in nonconference play.
The doubles point went back-and-forth, but LU (5-3) was able to pull it out to gain and early 1-0 advantagte. Michael Feucht and Nikita Lis downed Yannick Junger and Tomas Stillman 6-2 on court one to jump up 1-0, but the Roadrunners (4-4) evened it with a 6-4 win from Diogo Casa and Joe Rubio over Juuso Laitinen and Benny Schweizer.
Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Mikko Rajamaki locked up the point with a 6-4 win over Tito Moreiras and Jake Rother.
The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead on Hoogenboezem's singles win over Christian Carrillo, 6-4, 6-4, on court five. Moreiras cut into the lead with his win over Schweizer, 6-3, 6-3, on line three, but Lamar answered to make it 3-1 on a Laitinen's court four win over Rubio, 7-6, (7-5), 6-4.
UTSA went on to win the match with three-straight wins on court's two, one and six. Junger defeated Feucht on the second court, 7-5, 6-3 and 72-ranked Stillman downed Lis in 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. It all came down to the court six battle between Mark Ginting and Rajamaki, but Ginting was victorious in a nail biter, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
The Cardinals return to action for back-to-back games at the Thompson Family Tennis Center. The first match will be Friday at 2 o'clock against Southern Mississippi followed by Texas Pan-American on March 1 at 10 o'clock.
