Final Stats

BATON ROUGE, La. - No. 45 LSU started off fast and overcame the Lamar men's tennis team 6-1 Sunday morning at Dub Robinson Stadium, which gave the Cardinals a split on the tough season opening weekend.

Nikita Lis led the way for the weekend after he took down No. 67 Tam Trinh, 6-4, 6-2, 1-0 to leave his weekend undefeated. He beat Louisiana-Lafayette's Jarred Wynan on Saturday and Wynan and Coleman Wahlberg in doubles.

"Nik had a really strong weekend against some very tough opponents," said head coach Scott Shankles. "He was very smart and aggressive this weekend which has me very excited about him.

"He is showing tons of confidence, and we're looking forward to many more wins," said Shankles.

Lis and Michael Feucht had LSU's Arais Boris and Jordan Daigle tied at 4-4 when the match went unfinished after the Tigers claimed the doubles point. In the other doubles matches, Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Benny Schweizer fell to 52nd-ranked Trinh and Eric Perez, 6-0, and Chris Simpson and Justin Butsch defeated Juuso Laitinjen and Mikko Rajamaki.

No. 55 Chris Simpson downed Feucht 6-2, 6-1, and 111th-ranked Butsch beat Hoogenboezem, 6-4, 7-5. LSU's Boris defeated Schweizer, 6-1, 6-3, Simon Freund downed Laitinen, 6-1, 6-2, and Kenny Harrison overcame Rajamki 7-5, 6-1.

"Our guys gained a lot of experience from this weekend, and gained a lot of confidence from it," said Shankles. "They played good tennis and had good matches. We finished with several close scores, and some of the matches had scores that didn't indicate how close they were."

Lamar does not return to action until Jan. 31 when they host Seminole State at the Thompson Family Tennis Courts.
