BEAUMONT – A six-run third spelled doom for the Lamar baseball team on Saturday as visiting Houston Baptist overcame an early deficit to beat the Cardinals 7-3 at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

The Cards offense put up two runs in the opening two innings and would finish with 10 hits, but the firepower just wasn’t there for the hosts, as HBU picked up seven hits in the game’s decisive third inning en route to finishing with 13.

Justin Eckols was the standout performer for the Cards, going 3-for-4, and Jude Vidrine was the only other Card to pick up multiple hits as he finished 2-for-5. Reed Seeley was 1-for-3 with a walk, and he fired the opening salvo, homering to left center in the bottom of the first to give LU the early advantage.

Vidrine singled home another run in the second before the Huskies got to LU starter Chase Angelle for six runs in the ensuing frame. The Orange native was pegged for six runs on eight hits over 2.2 innings of work. It dropped his overall record to 4-5 on the season and marked just his second non-quality start in 12 appearances this season.

With the loss, Lamar fell to 28-19 on the year with a 13-10 Southland mark, and HBU improved to 21-22 and 10-13, respectively.

The Cards will be aiming for a fifth consecutive Southland series win on Sunday when the two sides return to Vincent-Beck for a rubber game. It will mark the final home game of the year for the Red and White, and first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
