BEAUMONT – Nicholls pitcher Mike Suk and Lamar’s Jonathan Dziedzic engaged in pitching duel on Thursday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium, but unfortunately for the Cardinals, Dziedzic came out on the losing end as LU fell in 3-1 fashion.
Dziedzic tossed 7.1 innings of two-run ball, allowing seven hits and striking out five. Meanwhile, Suk gave up eight hits and a score in nine innings of work.
Lamar looked to be in business early as Sam Bumpers led off with a single up the middle, and later scored when Nicholls left fielder David Zorn erred in fielding a Darian Johnson single.
Bumpers ended 1-for-4, and Johnson was the only Card to register multiple hits, going 2-for-4. As a team, LU was out-hit on the night 10-8.
Dziedzic was dominant over the ensuing frames, holding the Colonels hitless over the first three innings and not allowing a runner past first base into the fifth.
However, Nicholls got on the board in the seventh when Seth Stevens led off with a double and later scored on a Cody Dufrene groundout.
The Colonels grabbed their first lead an inning later. Leo Vargas chased Dziedzic from the mound with a single up the middle, and LU reliever Chase Angelle wasn’t as effective, allowing a double to Keith Cormier to hand Nicholls the lead. Tyler Duplantis doubled the advantage five pitches later with a single to right.
Lamar was unable to get much going over the next two frames, ultimately dropping to 13-12 in Southland play and 34-18 overall. Nicholls improved to 26-27 with a 9-16 SLC mark.
Both teams will return to Vincent-Beck Stadium for Friday’s Senior Night. Eleven LU seniors will be honored in a special ceremony prior to the scheduled 6:30 p.m. start.
