Final Stats
BEAUMONT – The Lamar men’s tennis team returned to its home slate on Saturday at Thompson Family Tennis Center, but Southern Miss proved to be quite the test as the Cardinals fell in 7-0 fashion.
“Southern Miss played a good solid match, and they were very strong,” head coach Scott Shankles said. “They rode a very good doubles round into singles, and they kept up the momentum. We have to start off better, but that’s part of being a young team. We had to dig ourselves out of a hole, and we couldn’t get it done.”
Bruno Snyder was the only Card to pick up a set, bouncing back from a 6-0 loss to Benjamin Feldman in the opening frame at No. 3 to win 7-6 in the second. However, the Peruvian was unable to complete the comeback, dropping the tiebreak in 10-7 fashion.
“Bruno had a slow start in his first set, but he was better in the second and had an early lead in the 10-point tiebreaker,” Shankles said. “His opponent was able to step it up after that, but it was still a good match for Bruno.”
Rob Lee also had a tight match at the top spot, but ultimately lost 7-5, 6-3 to Matt Frost, and Carl-Philip Lindqvist lost 6-3, 6-2 to Andrew Goodwin at line three.
In other singles action, Steven McMullan lost 6-2, 6-2 to Vasco Valverde, Mikko Rajamaki dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Juan Escobar, and Trey Crysel was beaten 6-2, 6-0 by Brad Marriott.
In doubles, Crysel and Lindqvist lost 8-0, and Rajamaki and Snyder fell in 8-2 fashion. Lee and McMullan’s match was called with the Cardinal duo leading 5-3.
Lamar dropped to 1-12 on the season, and will return to play on Sunday against Prairie View A&M. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
