BEAUMONT – It was another night, another win for the Lamar baseball team on Tuesday at Vincent-Beck Stadium as the Cardinals picked up their 11th consecutive victory with a 7-1 decision over visiting Prairie View A&M.

The streak is the longest for the program since 1980, and with a 15-2 record, Lamar is off to its best start since 1977.

The Cards started things early, as PVAMU starter Theodore Ater threw just 18 pitches before getting pulled from the mound. The junior loaded the bases with three walks to start off the frame. Johnathon Mata entered the game for the Panthers and picked up where Ater left off as Brad Picha earned a walk to score V.J. Bunner. However, that was all LU could muster vs. Mata, who sat the ensuing three hitters down in order.

Lamar finished with six bases on balls for the night, led by Jude Vidrine with three. The junior Nederland product also went 1-for-2 at the plate with a score.

Nine different Panther pitchers saw action in the game. Six allowed at least one hit, and four allowed at least one score.

Lamar doubled its lead in the second, taking advantage of a pair of errors by Panther second baseman Andre Oliver. One such error allowed Bunner to reach second and later score on a Darian Johnson single to left.

Bunner ended the day 0-for-3 with three runs, and Johnson was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in and a score. Overall, Lamar out-hit Prairie View 8-5.

Meanwhile, Jayson McKinley was effective on the mound for LU, allowing just two hits in four innings of work to pick up his first career victory. Travis Moore, Hunter Perry and Chase Angelle took the Cards the rest of the way, with only Moore allowing a run.

After surrendering a score in the top of the sixth, Lamar bounced back for a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Bunner reached on a fielder’s choice, and consecutive singles by Vidrine, Johnson and Picha brought in the runs.

Picha ended 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Both Sam Bumpers and Joe Arechiga scored in the seventh, and Jake Sutton cashed in on a Johnson triple in the eighth to account for the final score.

The Cards will close out their 13-game homestand on Wednesday as Texas Southern will make the short trek from Houston to Vincent-Beck Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
