BEAUMONT – Southland-leading Central Arkansas came out firing on Thursday evening, and the Lamar volleyball team couldn’t match as the Lady Cardinals fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-14) to the Sugar Bears at McDonald Gym.
Sierra Whittaker and Cortney Moore once again provided the bulk of the Lamar offense, combining for 16 kills, but the Lady Cards as a team recorded 23 and were out-hit 234 to .012.
However, the LU defense did hold the edge statistically, out-blocking the visitors from Conway, Ark., 7.0 to 6.0 and out-digging the team 34 to 33. Chelsea Grant, Madi Martin and Sierra Whittaker played a role in three blocks apiece, and Lauren Stahlman posted a match high in digs with eight. Erika Rojas chipped in seven.
Grant also had five kills, and Kensey Camp added a pair of service aces over the course of an impressive second-set run to pull close with UCA.
LU, which dropped the opening frame 25-18, took a little bit of momentum from the run and actually pulled within one at 23-22. However, it proved to be too little, too late as an Alyssa Dittrich kill and a Lady Card error handed UCA an ultimately insurmountable 2-0 lead.
The Red and White will return to action on Saturday as Oral Roberts steps into McDonald Gym. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
