THIBODAUX, La. — Entering Thursday night's match at David R. Stopher Gymnasium, Lamar had won seven consecutive meetings against Nicholls.
The Colonels snapped the streak with a 25-15, 25-14, 25-21 sweep, earning their first victory over the Cardinals since November 2022.
The teams were tied twice early in the opening set before Nicholls used a 6-0 run to build a six-point advantage.
Lamar trimmed the deficit to two with four consecutive points behind kills from
Nisaan Martinez and
Kimaya Webb, along with an ace from
Gabby Baker.
Nicholls responded with a 3-0 run to push its lead back to five and later scored four straight points to take a 10-point cushion en route to claiming the first set.
The Colonels carried that momentum into the second set, using an early 8-0 run to open a nine-point lead.
A 4-1 stretch later extended the advantage to 11.
Nicholls never trailed in the set and closed on a 4-1 run to take a 2-0 match lead.
The final set was the most competitive of the match, featuring 10 ties.
Lamar fell behind 4-2 before using a 3-0 run to take a one-point lead.
Maja Malinowska and
Madelynn Coy each recorded a kill during the surge.
After the score was tied at five, the Cardinals answered with another 3-0 run to regain the lead. Malinowska added an ace while
Leila Ceaser contributed a kill.
Lamar later used a 3-1 run to build a four-point advantage, but Nicholls responded with four consecutive points to tie the set at 11.
The score was tied six more times before the Colonels used a 6-1 run to open a 22-18 lead.
The Cardinals cut the deficit to two on a kill by
Gabrielle St. Louis and an ace from Coy, but Nicholls closed the match with a 3-1 run to complete the sweep.

MATCH NOTES
- Martinez recorded her eighth double-digit kill performance of the season, finishing with a team-high 10 kills.
- St. Louis added a season-high nine kills and three digs while Malinowska contributed five kills and five digs.
- Coy tallied two aces, one kill and seven digs.
- Katelyn Hughes paced the offense with 15 assists and added five digs while Alexa Gonzalez finished with 13 assists and six digs.
- Defensively, Kiana Souza recorded seven digs.
