BEAUMONT - For the first time since 2010, the Lamar men's tennis program is 1-0 after earning a 5-2 victory over visiting Alcorn State at Thompson Family Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
The day started with a 3-0 showing in doubles as Rob Lee and Carl-Philip Lindqvist picked up a tight 8-7 decision over Ernesto Santillan and Ivan Umnikov on Court 1, and the pairing of Steven McMullan and Bruno Snyder won at the two spot with an 8-2 win over Garry Amor and Max Tkachenko. Mikko Rajamaki and Trey Crysel, who was making his collegiate debut, won 8-1 at No. 3.
The middle of the lineup made the difference in singles as Alcorn took home victories at both No. 1 and No. 6.
Lindqvist and Snyder each grabbed 6-2, 6-0 victories at No. 2 and No. 3, knocking off Umnikov and Amor, respectively. Rajamaki made short work of Bhavtaran Singh at the fourth spot, winning 6-0, 6-0, and McMullen won 6-1, 6-1 over Vitali Vasileuski on Court 5.
Lee dropped a tough 4-6, 7-6, 7-10 decision to Santillan at the top spot, and Crysel lost to Tkachenko in 6-1, 6-4 fashion.
Later in the day, the Cards played host to an exhibition match against future Southland foe Incarnate Word. The visitors left Beaumont with a 6-1 victory as McMullan was the only Cardinal to pick up a singles victory, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Luke Trautmann at the fifth spot. The Houston native also combined with Rob Lee for an 8-4 doubles win over Aiden DeLeon and Mario Jakovljevic.
Lamar will wrap up its opening weekend on Sunday with a trip to No. 54 Rice on Saturday. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m.
