BEAUMONT, Texas - Carolina Salas continued her strong play at No. 1 singles, but it wasn't enough for the Lamar University women's tennis team in a 6-1 loss to visiting South Alabama in a non-conference match Sunday.
Salas won her third consecutive match to improve to 7-3 at No. 1 singles, but that was the only point the Lady Cardinals (4-6) could muster against the Jaguars (11-4). Salas was a 7-6, 6-4 winner over Alina Voltman.
South Alabama swept the doubles competition before winning five of the six singles matches. Carolina Maso at No. 3 singles and Alicia Porte at No. 4 singles for Lamar extended their matches to three sets before falling.
"We played hard," Lamar coach David Wong said. "We had the opportunity to win the doubles point, and we were in different singles positions to win, but I have to give credit to the South Alabama players for their determination and fight."
Lamar is at Stephen F. Austin for a Southland Conference match at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
