HOUSTON - The Lamar University men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 non-conference decision at Rice University in the season opener for both teams Saturday.
Lamar hung tough with Rice, which is ranked 39th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, but the experience of the Owls proved to be too much for the Cardinals.
"Rice played a solid match all around," Lamar coach Scott Shankles said. " We came out nervous and fell behind early in doubles and couldn't recover. Singles was better, however Rice took advantage of their opportunities and we didn't."
The closest match in singles play was at second singles, as Rice's Peter Frank held off Denis Ermilov 7-5, 6-3.
Lamar returns to action at noon Feb. 5 with a non-conference match at SMU.
