SAN ANTONIO - The Lamar University men's tennis team's hopes of an upset in the Southland Conference Tournament never materialized Saturday, as the Cardinals dropped a 4-0 decision to top-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the semifinals.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (14-9), ranked 75th in the nation, won the doubles point by claiming wins at first and second doubles. The Islanders then won matches at first, second and fifth singles to secure the team victory.
"We didn't play as well as we wanted to today," Lamar coach Scott Shankles said. "But give Corpus Christi credit. They're a good team."
Lamar (9-12), which was the No. 4 seed, saw its third doubles unit of Diego Snyder and Carlos Valdenebro leading 7-6 when their match was halted once the Islanders secured the doubles point. Lamar's Marton Horvath won his first set at fourth singles, but saw his match declared unfinished once Texas A&M-Corpus Christi secured its fourth point.
"It's disappointing, but we made some great strides this year," said Shankles, who wrapped up his first season as coach of the Cardinals. "I'm hoping for better things next year."
