THIBODAUX, La. - The Lamar University men's tennis team clinched a berth in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament with a 4-3 come-from-behind win over host Nicholls on Sunday.
The Cardinals (8-10 overall, 2-2 SLC) won the doubles point, but lost the first three singles matches before winning singles matches at No, 4, No. 5 and No. 6.
"I am incredibly proud of this team," first-year coach Scott Shankles said. "I am so happy for this team."
Dusan Savkovic earned Lamar's first singles point with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Razvan Cojocaru at No. 5 singles. Diego Snyder rallied from being down 5-2 in the second set for a 6-1, 7-5 win over Matshidiso at No. 6 singles to clinch the match. Marton Horvath registered a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 win over Palash Tiwari at No. 4 singles.
"Our guys were focused and confident," Shankles said. "This will give us a lot of confidence heading into our final conference match against UT Arlington."
The Cardinals will host UT Arlington at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Thompson Family Tennis Center before concluding the regular season by hosting Louisiana-Lafayette in a non-conference match at 2 p.m. Sunday.
