CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi rallied from early deficits in four singles matches to post a 6-1 win over Lamar in a Southland Conference men's tennis match Thursday.
Lamar (7-9 overall, 1-2 SLC) put a scare into the Islanders (11-9, 3-0), who are ranked 75th in the nation, by winning the first set in three matches and leading another match 5-0 in the first set, but the Cards couldn't hang on.
"We couldn't close out the sets and matches, so disappointment is present in all of us," Lamar coach Scott Shankles said. "But Corpus Christi deserves the win; they won the big points when they needed to."
Lamar's only singles victory came at No. 6 singles, as Diego Snyder registered a 7-5, 2-6, 10-1 win over Gergo Weidinger. Snyder and Carlos Valdenebro teamed for an 8-4 win over Alex Pavlov and Robert Raguz at No. 3 singles.
Lamar returns to action at 10 a.m. Saturday when it hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a non-conference match. Admission is free, but fans are asked to bring a canned food item to help the Southeast Texas Food Bank. All fans bringing canned food items will be eligible to win door prizes. Free food and beverages will be available.
"We have to get ready for Saturday," Shankles said. It will be nice to play in front of our fans."
