BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University men's tennis team suffered its first home loss of the season, dropping a 5-2 non-conference decision to Southern Mississippi on Sunday.

Lamar (6-7) got a win at No. 5 singles from Dusan Savkovic, who recorded a 6-0, t-0 victory over Michael Sims, and from Diego Snyder, who won by default at No. 6 singles.

"Southern Miss is a tough opponent, and it showed today," Lamar coach Scott Shankles said. "We had plenty of chances in both singles and doubles, but fell short with our opportunities."

Lamar lost three singles matches in three sets to Southern Mississippi (3-12), which has won two in a row.

"We need to maintain our focus and energy throughout the match in order to beat opponents like Southern Miss," Shankles said.

Lamar hosts Cleveland State in a non-conference match at 2 p.m. Friday.

"The guys feel very disappointed about this loss, which bodes well for the upcoming week of preparation against Cleveland State," Shankles said.
