BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University men's tennis team opened its season in impressive fashion with a 6-1 victory over visiting Alcorn State in a non-conference match Monday.

Lamar earned the first point of the day by sweeping the doubles competition, then took control of the match by winning five of the six singles matches.

Richard Filkuka won at first singles for Lamar. Marton Horvath, Robert Lee, Diego Snyder and Denis Emilov also won at singles for the Cardinals (1-0).

Alcorn State is 0-1.

Lamar returns to action at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rice.
