Lamar rode Anthony Miles' 23 points and turned in one of its better defensive efforts of the season to cruise past St. Gregory's 76-53 at the Montagne Center Wednesday night.
Lamar (6-7) shot 44 percent and used first half runs of 6-0, 7-0 and 8-0 to gain a 33-16 lead with 5:43 to play in the period. The Cardinals defeated the Cavaliers for the fifth-consecutive season and improved to 6-1 at home.
The Cardinals led 39-25 at the intermission and by as many as 27 on two occasions in the final four minutes.
LU handed out a season-high 19 assists, with five coming from Miles who also shared game-high rebounding honors of eight with teammate Charlie Harper. Justin Nabors had 12 points and five assists, while Kendrick Harris had nine points. Harper and Coy Custer had eight points apiece.
The Cardinals took full advantage of a considerable edge in height, outrebounding the Cavs 44-33. Big Red also held a 34-14 lead in points in the paint a converted 19 SGU turnovers into 30 points.
SGU was led in scoring by Fayzon Richey and Ryan Florie, who finished with 14 and 12 points respectively. The 53 points scored were the fewest allowed by Lamar this season.
Lamar will continue its stretch of three games in six days when it plays host to Tulane on Saturday, Jan. 2 at 7:05 p.m. The game will follow the LU women against LSU-Shreveport at 4:05 p.m.
