Lamar Falls to Akron, 10-8

BEAUMONT - Anthony Moore went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two runs batted in and slugged his first home run of the season, but Cardinals came up short in a 10-8 loss to Akron Friday on day one of the Lamar Classic at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Lamar dropped to 6-4 on the season while Akron evened its record at 4-4. Buffalo defeated New York Tech 12-7 in Friday's first game.

Saturday's schedule features four games beginning with New York Tech playing Akron at 10 a.m. Lamar will play Buffalo at 1 p.m. and Akron at 4 p.m. and Buffalo will face New York Tech in the night cap at 7 p.m.

Both teams scored runs in each of the first four innings. Brett Savage and Kevin Haas both singled to start the game for the Zips. Haas came around to score the game's first run on a wild pitch by Lamar starter Matt Morgal.

The Cardinals answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Moore led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by third baseman Vince Chiera. Tyler Link also reached safely with a bunt single. Moore scored on a passed ball by catcher Kurt Davidson.

Link scored when Jeff Vickers reached on an error by Haas at second base. Brian Taylor singled home Vickers to give Lamar a 3-1 lead.

Drew Turocy hit a solo home run for the Zips in the top of the second inning. Chris Dunkin doubled to center field in the home half of the second for the Cardinals. He scored on Moore's 2-run home run to put Lamar up 5-2.

The two teams exchanged runs in the third inning. Haas homered for the Zips and Brent Harris singled to right field and scored on David Moore's single to left field to make the score 6-3.

Akron took the lead for good with six runs in the top of the fourth inning. Phil Bednar delivered a bases loaded 2-run single to center field. Haas had an RBI double to right center. Davidson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field and Doug McNulty singled in a run to put the Zips up 9-6.

Lamar responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jeremiah Sammy singled, stole second and scored on Vickers' single to left field. Vickers scored on a throwing error by Davidson to make the score 9-8.

The Zips closed out the scoring with a run in the top of the fifth inning. John Turk singled to right field and scored on Turocy's double to right center field.

Frank Turocy (2-1) started and picked up the win for Akron. He allowed eight runs, five earned, on 10 hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched. Tom Farmer retired the final two batters for his second save of the season.

Morgal (1-1) took the loss for Lamar, allowing nine runs, four earned, on eight hits with two walks and one strikeout in 4.0 innings pitched. Ricky Testa pitched two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts. John Ross Ramirez pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs on three hits with one strikeout.

Drew Turocy went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI to pace the Zips. Haas went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a double, a home run and two RBI. McNulty and Turk each had two hits.

Vickers went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI for the Cardinals and Harris went 2-for-3 with a runs scored.
