BEAUMONT - The Lamar University men's tennis team dropped their first match of Southland Conference play Thursday afternoon, falling 4-3 to the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana at the Cardinals Courts.
The Cardinals began the match by winning the doubles point, coming from behind to grab the point from the Lions. The No. 1 doubles pair of Filip Kanczula and Maciej Bogusz outlasted Ondrej Krivka and Matthieu Leboucher for a 9-8 win, while Mario Janjic and Allan Gomes bested Medhi Darlis and Vladimir Paunic 9-7 at No. 2 doubles. The Lions picked up an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles as Alexis Biarneix and Julien Roussel handed the Cardinal duo of Emmanuel Olivier and David Wanja 8-5.
In singles play the Cardinals fell short of the three points they needed for victory, as they picked up wins at number one and number four. In the top spot Kanczula took out Leboucher SLU 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 while Gomes defeated Jonathan Fussell 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Southeastern won the match by winning at two and three and five and six. At No. 2 Vladimir Paunic defeated Janjic 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 and Ondrej Krivka took down Diego Snyder 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3. At No. 5 singles Alexis Biarneix ousted Maciej Bogusz 6-1, 6-2 and Jakub Kwasniewicz knocked out Andres Medina 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 singles
The LU men, who fall to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in SLC play with the loss, will be back in action on Monday when they take on Centenary in Shreveport, La. at 2 p.m.
