BEAUMONT - The Lamar University men's tennis team headed north for a pair of matches on Sunday where they went 1-1 against Southern Methodist and the University of Texas at Tyler.
After starting the day with a loss at SMU, the Lamar men travelled to Tyler, Texas for a nightcap against UT-Tyler. The Cardinals bounced back from the afternoon setback in Dallas, cruising past the Patriots 6-0.
Filip Kanczula picked up a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over Dustin Phillips and Mario Janjic knocked off Steven Campbell 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. In the match at No. 3, Diego Snyder edged out Robert Sajovich 6-3, 7-6 while Allan Gomes defeated David Ashlock 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4. At No. 5 singles Maciej Bogusz cruised past William McDonald 6-1, 6-1 while Emmanuel Olivier defeated Nick Kreines 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
In their first action of the day the Cardinals were overwhelmed by SMU, who lived up to their No. 44 national ranking with a 6-0 win at the Bent Tree Country Club.
At No. 1 singles, Robin Fahgen picked up a win over Kanczula 6-2, 6-0 while David Kuczer defeated Janjic in a close match at No. 2, 7-6, 6-2. In the third spot, Alex Skrypko notched a win over Snyder, 6-1, 6-1 while Oivind Alver defeated Bogusz, 6-0, 6-0. In the match at No. 5 singles Adolfo Solares dropped Allan Gomes, 6-2, 6-3. and at No. 6, Taylor St. Eve squeaked by Andres Medina, 6-3, 7-6, to close out the match for the Mustangs.
The Cardinals did not play doubles in either of Sunday's matches.
The LU men will be back in action on Friday when they take on Alcorn State at 2 p.m. at the Cardinal Courts. On Saturday they will be participating in the Alumni match which gets underway at 9:30 a.m.
