TULSA, Okla. - The Lamar University men's tennis team served up a 4-2 win at Oral Roberts in the season-opener for both teams on Friday.
Under new head coach Greg Davis, Lamar (1-0) got things started with a sweep of the double action for a 1-0 lead. Filip Kanczula and Maciej Bogusz posted an 8-1 win at No. 1 singles, Diego Snyder and Mario Janjic won 8-5 at No. 2 and Emmanuel Olivier and David Wanja won 8-3 at No. 3.
The Cardinals then got singles win at the one, four and five spots. Filip Kanczula earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1, Maciej Bogusz secured a 7-6 (1), 6-1 win at No. 4 and Allan Gomes eased past his opponent at the fifth spot, 6-2, 6-0. David Wanja was leading 5-2 in the first set 5-2, but with the win in hand, the match was retired.
ORU (0-1) got its points at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions as Lamar's Mario Janjic dropped his match at No. 2 6-4, 6-4 and Diego Snyder fell at No. 3 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
"I think this was a great win for us opening up on the road beating a team that was in the NCAA tournament a year ago," Davis said. "We had some great performances from Filip and our new Freshman Allan Gomes in singles as well as at number one doubles."
