Cardinal Tennis Drops Two to Nationally Ranked Foes

DALLAS - The Lamar University men's tennis team opened the 2007 season over the weekend with a pair of losses to nationally ranked Tulsa and SMU on Friday and Saturday, but newcomer Mario Jancic proved to be a power for the Cards at No. 2 singles.

The Cardinals opened the weekend with a 6-1 loss at No. 26 Tulsa, but did not go down without a fight.

Jancic defeated the nation's 34th ranked player Will Gray 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at number two singles to collect Lamar's only win. Filip Kanczula fell to No. 6 Arnau Brugues 7-5, 6-1 at number one singles and Maciej Bogusz was defeated 6-3, 6-1 by No. 90 Ricardo Soriano at number three singles.

Andres Medina dropped his match at No. 4 singles to Federico Soriano 6-1, 6-2 and Diego Camacho knocked off Emmanuel Olivier 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Rounding out the match for Lamar was David Wanja, who fell to Ross Cunningham 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

In doule play the Cardinals top tandem of Kanczula and Bogusz went toe-to-toe with the nation's number eight pair of Camacho and Cunningham, falling 9-8 (7-5). At number two doubles the pair of Jancic and Tyler Cobb fell 8-4 to Brugues and Federico Soriano 8-4, while Olivier and Wanja fell at No. 3 to Ricardo Soriano and Lucques Maasdorp.

On Saturday the Cards then took on the No. 39 team in the nation, SMU, in Dallas. Lamar again fell 6-1, with Jancic picking up the lone win as he dropped David Kuczer 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 at the number two spot.

In doubles action Kuczer and Chris Hooshyar paired for a win at the No. 2 doubles position over Mario Janjic and Andres Medina, 8-5. Sealing the doubles point for the Mustangs, Oivind Alver and Adolfo Solares held off Brett Sticker and Tyler Cobb of Lamar at No. 3.

In other singles action, Alex Skrypko took down Kanczula at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1. At the No. 3 spot, Alver paced for a, 6-0, 6-0, win over Bogusz while Hooshyar coasted to a, 6-1, 6-2, win over Medina at the No. 4 spot. Solares took a win over Olivier at the No. 5 position, 6-2, 6-3 and Robin Fahgen of SMU swept Sticker, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 6 spot.
