ARLINGTON - The No. 3 seeded Lamar University women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the Southland Conference Tournament by knocking out sixth seeded Louisiana Monroe 4-3, while the Cardinal men fell to UT-Arlington 4-0.
For the SLC tournament, the singles competition was contested first for all of Friday's matches in an effort to speed up play.
In singles play, the Lady Cardinals picked up three wins, while dropping three. Andrea Martinez took out Diana Espinal 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Pamela Martinez took out Pauline Bourdet 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 while Maria Gutierrez downed Giovanna Arrondo 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5.
The Lady Indians picked up their wins as Tara Shelander fell to Noelia Leon 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2, Tanya Roberts fell to Daliny Sithimorada 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3, and Sharon Makhanya defeated Kendall Gibbs when Gibbs retired at No. 6 singles.
With the match tied at three, the teams went to doubles play to decide the match. The Lady Cardinals pulled out the win by taking two of three in doubles play to advance to the next round. At No. 1 doubles, Shelander and Andrea Martinez knocked off Daliny Sithimorada and Diana Espinal 8-5, Roberts and Pamela Martinez fell 8-3 to Noelia Leon and Sharon Makhanya at No.2 while Kendall Gibbs and Maria Gutierrez dropped Pauline Bourdet and Giovanna Arrondo 8-6 at No. 3 to win the match for Lamar.
The women's match started in Arlington and was moved to Ennis during the second set of singles play.
In men's play, the sixth seeded Cardinals fell to UT-Arlington in the final match of the day in the SLC tourney.
At No. 1 singles, Filip Kanczula fell to Sandy Farquharson 6-2, 6-1, Evan Hays fell to Daniel Omana 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3, Wesley Arnold was dropped by Alberto Agis 6-2, 6-1 at No.4, Brett Sticker fell 6-1, 6-0 to Ian Ian Vazquez-Rowe. With the match decided due to the four wins by Arlington, the other two matches for Lamar were as follows; Tyler Cobb was dropped 6-3, 6-2 by Niels Buksik and Maciej Bogusz was trailing in his match with Alberto Agis when the competition was decided.
The Lady Cards will be in action again Saturday at 2 p.m. when they take on second seed UT-Arlington. Lamar fell to Arlington earlier in the season.
