Final Stats
BEAUMONT - The Lamar University men's tennis picked up their first win in Southland Conference play Saturday afternoon, taking down the University of Texas Pan American 4-3 in Edinburg Texas. The win gave the Cardinals a weekend split, as they fell 5-2 to Abilene Christian on Friday.
In their win over Pan American, the Cards were led by their top player, and a host of walk-on players, who came up big in the clutch.
In doubles action the Cardinals picked up a win by Filip Kanczula and Maciej Bogusz at the No. 1 spot, as they defeated Nik Porter and Rehman Esmail 8-3. The No. 2 doubles pair of Jacob Eastwood and Evan Hays fell 8-3 to Alberto Gomez and Andrew Bost, leaving the doubles point in limbo going to the No. 3 match up. The Cardinals pulled out the doubles point with an 8-6 win by walk-ons Brett Sticker and Tyler Cobb knocking off the tandem of Oliver Steil and Danny Farias.
In singles action Kanczula started Lamar off with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Porter in the No. 1 spot, while Bogusz and Eastwood fell in their matches at the two and three spots. Walk on Wesley Arnold, playing in the No. 4 spot for Lamar then won his match convincingly, with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Gomez to give LU a 3-2 advantage in the match.
Bost then picked up a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over LU's Hays in the No. 5 spot to even the match at three points apiece, leaving the final point to the No. 6 match between Sticker and Farias. After a close opening set which Sticker won 7-5, the Cardinals closed out the match when Sticker posted a 6-2 win in the second set.
The win snapped a four match skid for Lamar, and gives them their first win on Southland Conference action this season.
On Friday the Cardinals dropped a 5-2 decision to the Wildcats of Abilene Christian in McAllen, Texas.
In singles action against Abilene Christian, Kanczula picked up a 7-6, 2-6, 10-5 win over Casper Steenkamp at No. 1 and Bogusz collected a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jason Ray for the Cardinals only wins in the match. The Wildcats swept the Cards in doubles play, and took down Lamar in the three through six spots to close out the match. The Cardinals, 2-8 on the year, will be in action again Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they take on Centenary at the Cardinal Courts.
