Drapeau, Milburn Capture Flight Titles in Season Opener

| By:
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Lamar University men's tennis team had a strong opening day of action in their season-opening fall tournament and carried that momentum all the through Sunday's finals at the Jake Frederick Islander Opener in Corpus Christi, Texas. Big Red had three individuals and a doubles team vying for flight titles Sunday winning two of the four matches.

Junior Louis Drapeau and freshman Dan Milburn brought home the two titles – Drapeau in the Orange Flight and Milburn in the Gold Flight. Drapeau got things started for the Red and White and gritted out a marathon of a three-setter to defeat Abilene Christian's Grant Lothringer. Drapeau won the opening set 6-4, but dropped the second in what could have been a momentum-turning second, 7-6, (8-6). Drapeau was undeterred from the second-set loss and bounced back in the super tiebreak to record a 10-8 victory.

Milburn was next and he squared off against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Paxton Oshea. Despite playing in front of Oshea's home crowd the LU rookie remained poised recording a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

The Cardinals return to action Friday, Oct. 2, when they will host the annual Ron Wesbrooks Invitational. The tournament field and flights will be released at a later date.
