CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Lamar University men's tennis team opened the 2026 fall portion of its schedule Friday at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open. The Cardinals walked away with numerous victories posting a 3-2 record in doubles matches and 5-5 in singles.
 
Sophomore Axel Bergh put LU in the win column with his straight-sets victory over UT Rio Grande Valley's Tsz Him Chan, 6-4, 6-2 in the Purple Flight. Bergh was one of two Cardinals to pick up victories in the flight as senior Stefano Chappuis recorded a hard-fought victory over UTRGV's Miguel Bellorio Pinheiro, 7-5, 7-5.
 
Junior Louis Drapeau also advanced to the semifinals of his flight after defeating UTRGV's Loic Young, 6-4, 7-5, in the Orange Flight. Junior Fabian Anthin will also compete in Saturday's semifinals after receiving a bye on the opening day of competition.
 
True freshman Dan Milburn got his Lamar career off to a strong start with a victory over Eoghan Samyn from Rio Grande Valley. The match went to a super tiebreak, but Milburn prevailed 6-2, 3-6, 11-9.
 
It was Bergh and sophomore Rintaro Shukuda who got the doubles teams out to a strong start. They posted a 7-5 decision over Abilene Christian's Jonas Keck and Jorge Aza Casaseca. After the Flight B doubles win, it was Milburn, along with teammate Lukas Hamacher, who added to the win total in Flight C. The LU duo recorded a win in tiebreaking fashion, 7-6 (10-8) to advance. They will be joined in the Flight C semifinals by Chappuis and Anthin who, as if following a script from their teammates, also picked up a win in the tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4) over ACU's Griffin Lovern and Dennis Dutine.
 
Big Red returns to action Saturday at 9 a.m. for the start of the second day of action.
