BEAUMONT, Texas – When Lamar University and UIW step on the court Tuesday at the Thompson Family Tennis Center, it will happen with Southland Conference title aspirations on the line. The match, which was originally slated for Saturday, had to be moved to Tuesday due to the threat of storms in the area.
Despite the weather postponement, the excitement around the match has gotten stronger as the Southland's two Cardinals step on the court looking to win at least a share of the conference title. A Lamar win and Big Red can do no worse than co-conference champions, while a UIW victory plus a win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi would guarantee them the outright title and the league's No. 1 overall seed in the conference tournament which will take place later this month in Beaumont.
Lamar still has a shot at an outright title but they would need to beat UIW and then have San Antonio's Cardinals loose at home to A&M-Corpus Christi.
Lamar is 12-11 (.522) on the season and 3-1 (.750) in Southland Conference play with the lone loss being a heartbreaking setback to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last week in Beaumont. Lamar currently sits just a match back of UIW who enters the week as the league's last remaining undefeated team (11-3/3-0 SLC). The Southland's other Cardinals have won three of their past four outings with the lone setback during that time being a 4-0 loss at No. 36 Arkansas. The two teams are 6-6 (.500) all-time against each other with a similar 3-3 (.500) record when the two meet in Beaumont. Tuesday's contest is set for an 11 a.m. start from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
The Cardinals will close out the 2026 regular season Friday with a rematch against Abilene Christian. Lamar made the trip to Abilene to close out the month of February and now the Wildcats will return the favor. ACU has won its past four outings but has also dealt with several cancellations due to weather over the course of the past three weeks. The match against Abilene Christian is set for Friday at 11 a.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
