BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University men's tennis team has a busy weekend ahead with three matches in as many days beginning Friday at Southern. The match against the Jaguars will kick off a stretch of three matches in three days and will have the Cardinals traveling from Beaumont to Baton Rouge to Vicksburg, Miss. and back.
The Cardinals are riding a bit of momentum after splitting a doubleheader at home against Lubbock Christian – a nationally ranked Division II squad with a long history of knocking off DI schools. Big Red walked away from that match knowing they had a chance at sweeping the doubleheader as well dropping the opening match 4-3 before bouncing back to win the afternoon tilt by the same score.
The Jaguars enter the day looking for their first victory of the season. Southern is 0-2 after 7-0 losses at South Alabama and Tulane. Friday's match against Southern will begin at 2 p.m. from the Southern Tennis Center.
Following the match at Southern, the Cardinals will make the trip over to Vicksburg to face North Alabama (Saturday, 11 a.m.) and Alcorn State (Sunday, 10 a.m.). UNA is also looking for its first win of the year but they have faced a non-conference schedule similar to that of Lamar. The Lions are 0-4 after matches against Mississippi – who is just out of the national rankings followed by No. 6 Ohio State, Old Dominion and Samford.
LU wraps things up with Alcorn State Sunday (10 a.m.). The Braves are 3-2 on the year and enter the weekend riding a three-match win streak. Lamar will be the next contest for all three opponents.
The Cardinals hold a very strong all-time record against two of the three going a combined 39-0 versus Southern and Alcorn State (9-0 vs. Southern, 30-0 vs. Alcorn). Saturday's contest will be the first meeting between Lamar and North Alabama.
