MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. — It was a hot start to Day 1 of the Sandestin Collegiate Classic as the Lamar University men's golf team bagged 22 birdies in the opening round Monday at the Raven Golf Club.
Tallying a total score of 282, LU finds itself tied for sixth place, five strokes behind first place South Alabama and the University of Louisiana Monroe and one stroke behind fifth place Mercer.
Nathan Woodham had a bogey-free front nine, making nine consecutive pars. On the back nine, he made three birdies to shoot two under par (69) for the day.
Woodham was one of four Cardinals to finish under par on the back nine.
David Schneider Jerez made five birdies, four on the back nine. He shot one under on the back nine and even par on the front nine.
Schneider shot one under for the round (70).
Toby Peters and
Fermin Martinez each shot two under par on the back nine.
Martinez had a bogey-free back nine as he made two birdies on the final two holes while also making seven straight pars.
Fifteen of the 22 birdies were made on the back nine. The Cardinals fared well on the 17th hole as five of the six players came up with a birdie.
Filip Widepalm finished the front nine at even par with two birdies and six pars.
Matthew Bramford, who is competing as an individual, finished at even par on the back nine after he carded four birdies for the day.
West Florida's T.J. Thompson shot a 65 to sit atop the individual leaderboard with a one stroke lead over Middle Tennessee's Carter Maneth.
